About This Festival
Sinulog marks the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines and the Santo Niño image Magellan gave to the wife of Rajah Humabon in 1521. The dance itself is older than that: two steps forward, one step back, the rhythm of the current the festival is named for.
The grand parade runs most of a day along a route through downtown Cebu City, with contingents from across the Visayas competing in full costume. Around it sit a fluvial procession at dawn on the Saturday, a solemn foot procession the same afternoon, and a week of smaller events at the Basilica.
What to Expect
- Crowds in the hundreds of thousands along the parade route
- Road closures across downtown from early morning
- Street food, water vendors, and body paint everywhere
- Contingents in full costume from across the Visayas
- A long, hot, loud day — pace yourself
Getting There
The route is walkable from most of downtown Cebu City, and the closures make walking faster than any vehicle on the day. From Mactan-Cebu International Airport, allow well over two hours on parade day rather than the usual forty-five minutes.
