About This Festival
Karansa is a Cebuano word for dancing out of plain happiness, and Danao City built its fiesta around it. The steps are named for what they are — kiay for the hips, kembot for the waist, kurahay for the arms thrown up — and the contingents string them together into something closer to a celebration than a competition.
It runs with the feast of Santo Tomás de Villanueva, the city's patron, so the dancing sits alongside a fiesta mass, a street procession and several days of the town being fed by whoever lives on that street.
What to Expect
- A street dance through the poblacion, finishing at the plaza
- A fiesta mass and procession at the Santo Tomás de Villanueva parish
- Open houses along the route — being handed food by strangers is the norm
- A working city rather than a resort town: little English signage, no ticket booths
Getting There
Danao is about an hour and a half north of Cebu City on the coastal road, by bus from the North Bus Terminal or by van from Ayala. The plaza is in the poblacion, a short walk from where the buses stop.
