Cebu City
The cross planted in 1521 that marks the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines
A small open-sided pavilion on Magallanes Street shelters the cross that Ferdinand Magellan's party planted in April 1521, at the point where Rajah Humabon, his consort and several hundred of their subjects were baptised.
What stands inside is a hollow tindalo casing. The original is said to be sealed within it, encased in the 1830s to stop pilgrims chipping splinters away to keep as relics. The ceiling above is painted with the scene of the baptism.
It takes ten minutes to see and sits directly beside the Basilica, which is how nearly everyone visits it.
In downtown Cebu City beside the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. Any jeepney bound for Colon passes within two blocks; taxis can drop you on Magallanes Street.
