Cebu City
The former provincial jail, now Cebu's main history museum
The Cárcel de Cebú was built in the 1870s as the provincial jail and held prisoners until 2004. The cell blocks now run as galleries around a courtyard, one per period: pre-colonial, Spanish, American, the Japanese occupation, and the post-war republic.
The building does not hide what it was. Barred windows and cell doors are left in place, and the Japanese-occupation gallery occupies the block that was used for political detainees.
On M.J. Cuenco Avenue north of Parian, about ten minutes on foot from Casa Gorordo or a short taxi ride from downtown.
